Writer Gail Milissa Grant Visits Tirana

Sponsored by the US Embassy, Ms. Gail Milissa Grant writer, public speaker and former US diplomat visited Tirana for a two day program in honor of Black History Month. During her visit, Milissa met high school students at Ismail Qemali School, as well as students of Tirana University and European University of Tirana and spoke about the “Antecedents of the Modern Civil Rights Movement,” uncovering for the students the little known history of what preceded the March on Washington, and the well-known “I Have a Dream” speech of Martin Luther King, Jr. Ms. Grant explained how the civil rights movement was a movement on behalf of many Americans, and how civic action can have important results. The English Language students of Tirana University enjoyed her presentation at the American Corner Tirana, learning about fascinating portions of American history. Ms. Grant also introduced the movie “Boycott” at the Marubi School of Film and Multimedia and concluded her visit with a discussion at Hemingway Bar with Albanian writers and poets where she discussed her motivations and their shared love of using written words to convey important ideas.
