On October 27, Ambassador Lu joined a huge turnout of local participants and members of the Embassy community in the fifth annual Albanian “Breast Cancer Awareness Walk”, organized by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Albania. The event was supported by the U.S. Embassy, the Ministry of Health, the Institute of Public Health, the Municipality of Tirana, local businesses, and media. Joining Ambassador Lu to highlight and introduce the event were the Minister of Health Beqja, UNDP Resident Representative Benjelloun, a survivor, and representatives of the YWCA. The performances and heartfelt messages of three well-known women singers created a very a warm and cheerful atmosphere, while members of Albania’s government were also well-represented by female ministers and deputy ministers joining the popular walk as well. Addressing the participants, Ambassador Lu emphasized the importance of early screening and a healthy lifestyle for the successful prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The event, initiated five years ago by the Embassy, has grown immensely since its inception, and concluded the month-long awareness and educational campaign organized by YWCA Albania, during which a mobile clinic provided free exams to the women and girls of Tirana’s suburbs.
