The right to engage in peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right. For the past several months, the majority of participants has exercised its democratic right to peacefully protest. However, the moment a peaceful protest is marred by an act of violence, by even one individual, the democratic purpose of the protest is compromised. It is unlawful and undemocratic to commit acts of violence, including the destruction of property. We call upon all involved in Saturday’s protest to renounce violence to ensure a peaceful and constructive demonstration.
