Fulbright Programs

The Embassy of the United States of America is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 Fulbright Foreign Student Program. The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is a one-to two year degree program for young professionals and university graduates interested to pursue Master’s Degree studies in the United States. Fellowships are awarded competitively to candidates who best demonstrate a commitment to service in public and/or private sectors and the potential to positively impact the future of Albania.

Duration of Grant

The Fellowship is generally awarded for one or two academic years at a university in the United States to pursue a masters’ degree. Family members may be eligible to accompany Fellows on a case by case basis.  Fellows are required to return to Albania for at least two (2) years at the conclusion of their fellowship.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be citizens of the Republic of Albania.
  • Applicants must hold a university degree requiring at least four years full-time study (or three + one, three + two in the Bologna system);
  • Applicants must have a minimum of two year professional experience in the field of study and demonstrate leadership ability
  • Applicants must be proficient in oral and written English (minimum of 580 paper based TOEFL score; TOEFL test scores are not required at the time of application.)
  • Applicants must be eligible for a J-1 visa.
  • Applicants must receive a satisfactory medical clearance.

NOTE: U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, immediate family members of U.S. Embassy employees, recipients of Fulbright grants within the last five years individuals already registered for study programs in the United States or with previous U.S. study experience, employed in the United States, married to American citizens, or who have applied to immigrate or have sought asylum in another country are not eligible to apply.

Financial Provisions

The Fulbright Fellowship provides tuition, monthly maintenance allowance, a book and supplies allowance, and round trip international travel to the host institution. The Fulbright Grant is not renewable.

Application forms for the Fulbright Scholar Fellowship must be filled out electronically online, here.  Completed applications must be received in the system no later than June 20, 2018.

A complete application includes:

  • Application form (generated by the Embark system)
  • Translated and notarized copies of university diploma(s) and grade transcripts from all educational institutions attended
  • Academic writing sample (as required)
  • Three letters of reference
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter from employer confirming employment
  • Copy of bio page of passport
  • Copies of certificates from previous trainings (valid to field of study)

Duration of Grant

Fellowships are generally awarded for three to six months at a university in the United States.  Family members may be eligible to accompany scholars on a case by case basis.  Scholars are required to return to Albania for at least two (2) years at the conclusion of their fellowship.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Doctoral Degree or Ph.D. candidates;
  • Minimum of five years of teaching and/or research experience at an Albanian university
  • Proficiency in English appropriate to the proposed research project to be carried out in the United States (minimum of 580 paper based TOEFL score) – TOEFL test scores are not required at the time of application;
  • Demonstrated leadership and research skills, and a potential for advancement in their profession;
  • Albanian citizenship and employment
  • Age limit: 55

Individuals already registered for study programs in the United States, with previous U.S. study experience, recipients of Fulbright grants within the last five years, employed in the United States, married to American citizens, or who have applied to emigrate or have sought asylum in another country are not eligible to apply.

  • Three references
  • Xeroxed copy of passport
  • Translated copy of diplomas (university, Master’s and Doctoral degree)
  • Other certificates  received (related to field of study)
  • Letter from employer confirming employment
  • Letters of invitation or appointment from U.S. institutions (preferred but not required)

After you submit the application on line, you should print and mail a hard copy with all the additional documents to the following address, postmarked no later than June 15, 2017.

The Embassy of the United States of America is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program.  The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program is a three to six month non-degree post-doctoral award program for junior and senior researchers, university lecturers and experts from academic and research institutions in Albania to conduct research and/or lecture at a university in the United States.  Fellowships are awarded competitively to candidates who best demonstrate a commitment to service in public and/or private sectors and the potential to positively impact the future of Albania.

  • Researchers in medicine, dental medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing and other fields whose research proposals include clinical contact with patients are not eligible for Fulbright grants. Candidates with medical degrees are not allowed to pursue medical residencies or internships in the United States as Fulbright Fellows.
