Demonstration Alert for U.S. Citizens
Location: Announced gathering points include, but are not limited to, the following areas in Tirana, Albania:
- Ministry of Interior area, downtown
Event: A political protest is expected to take place on Monday, May 18, 2020, beginning around 4:30 p.m. The duration of the expected demonstration is unknown. Some past demonstrations have turned violent, including use of Molotov cocktails. Security forces have used water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds.
U.S. Embassy personnel and family members have been directed to avoid the area where demonstrators are gathered.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid potential sites of protest, including the National Boulevard.
- Avoid any public gathering of people.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Keep a low profile.
