Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Victoria Nuland, visited Tirana today and met with President Nishani, Prime Minister Rama, Foreign Minister Bushati, and Democratic Party Chair Basha. They discussed a broad range of bilateral issues that form part of the U.S-Albania Strategic Partnership, including security, defense, and energy issues. In addition, they discussed the recent elections and the need for all parties to move forward on judicial reform and decriminalization. The Assistant Secretary reiterated that without these key democratic reforms Albania won’t be able to take the next step towards greater Euro-Atlantic integration. In a meeting with civil society leaders, the Assistant Secretary applauded the role of civil society in promoting accountability and transparency in government, exposing corruption, and advocating for human rights and urged them to take a more active role in pushing for reforms.
