Ambassador Lu Remarks at the Funeral of RENEA officer Ibrahim Basha

The family of Police Officer Ibrahim Basha, officers of the Albanian State Police, members of the Albanian Special Forces, ladies and gentlemen,

On behalf of Albania’s NATO allies that served with then-Special Forces nën tetor Ibrahim Basha in Afghanistan and Iraq, we honor him for his service to his nation.  We also honor his service to the cause of peace in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Nën tetor Basha did not serve in a quiet or safe places.  He served shoulder-to-shoulder with his Albanian and American Special Forces brothers in Kandahar — one of the most dangerous regions of Afghanistan — and war-torn Mosul in Iraq.  He served two assignments in Afghanistan and three assignments in Iraq.  He received two international service medals for his bravery and dedication.

RENEA Officer Ibrahim Basha’s killing in Lazarat is a national tragedy.  We salute his bravery and sacrifice in the war against organized crime and drug trafficking.  Just this week, I had the opportunity to see a demonstration by RENEA and the Albanian Special Forces.  I was struck by their skill and professionalism.  These dedicated men are the finest soldiers and police officers in Albania.

Your entire nation should be proud of their service.

We in the NATO alliance are proud to serve alongside heroes like Ibrahim Basha.

I offer my condolences to his family and to all Albanians on behalf of NATO, and on behalf of the United States of America.
